The Biosphere Tourism organization develops certifications to guarantee an adequate long-term balance between the economic, socio-cultural and environmental dimensions of a destination, reporting significant benefits for tourism entities, society, and the environment. Biosphere Tourism has certified 19 destinations across the globe, one of which is Thompson Okanagan, British Columbia.
Biosphere© certification is granted by the Responsible Tourism Institute (RTI), an independent body created in 1995 with the aim of promoting sustainable development actions and programs in tourism destinations and organizations. RTI’s mission is to promote the principles of the World Charter for Sustainable Tourism and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations.
The Summerland Waterfront Resort & Spa is committed to fulfilling Biosphere Tourism certification requirements as part of responsible tourism in the Okanagan, British Columbia.
Being a part of Biosphere goes beyond "being green". Biosphere Adhesion Program deliverables are based on 17 sustainable development goals set out by the United Nations. These goals include gender equality, reduced inequalities, sustainable cities and communities, climate action, industry innovation, and infrastructure.
Energy Efficiency
At the Summerland Waterfront Resort & Spa, the biggest component of the hotel’s energy efficiency strategy is a state-of-the-art geothermal system. The geothermal system draws naturally occurring heat from the earth to provide the hotel’s cooling and heating systems, including heating of the year-round outdoor pool and two hot tubs.
All suites and common areas use energy-efficient LED lighting.
Wetlands
Get back to nature and experience the peacefulness of one of the only five natural wetlands in Lake Okanagan located directly in front of the Summerland Resort.
The development of the resort was very mindful to conserve the one acre of the wetland area. To integrate the wetlands with the resort a boardwalk was established to encourage guests and visitors to experience the number of birds (including a number of species on the endangered list), a resident beaver, muskrats, turtles, ducks, aquatic and plant life. Continuing with this positive approach and through cooperation with government bodies, the resort has added interpretive signage.
Responsible Practices
The resort also encourages sustainable behavior from their guests by providing recycling bins in all suites and common areas, water fill stations instead of single-use plastic bottles, and providing the option of reusing linens and towels.
Air Conditioning & Heating
Keep the windows and balcony doors closed at all times to keep the heat of the day (in the summer) out.
Rent One of Our Bikes
Go for a spin! Take out one of our free cruiser bikes for a tour of Lakeshore Drive instead of driving to the local beach or park.
Drinking-Water
Water, made available from the faucets in the bathrooms or kitchens, is all safe for drinking. In fact, the Resort's water is sourced and serviced by the Town of Summerland which takes pride in exceptionally clean great-tasting drinking water. There is no need for plastic single-use drinking bottles of water.
Towel Reuse
To indicate you would like to reuse your towels simply hang them on the towel rack. Should fresh towels be required, we are asking to place used towels in the bathtub.
Sheet Reuse
Place the conservation card on your bed to indicate that you would like fresh linens. If the card is not present, the housekeeping staff will then simply remake the bed.
Recycling
Recycling bins are available in our guest suites and meeting rooms. Make full use of it by placing items such as newspapers, paper, plastics, cans, and glass in it rather than in the garbage bin.
Water Conservation
When brushing your teeth or washing/shaving your face shut the tap off or fill the sink to avoid leaving the water running. Keeping your showers short not only saves water but also saves energy (used to heat the water). A 10-minute shower can use up to 20 gallons/75 liters of water.
Energy Conservation
Turn off all lights and electronics when you leave the room. Close the windows, and close the drapes during the day to keep your room cool.
